The number of women entering emergency medicine has been steadily increasing, as has the number of female medical school graduates in general. But what factors lead to the career satisfaction of these female emergency medicine physicians in this ever expanding specialty? And are they any different from the factors which lead to career satisfaction in any field of endeavor for women?

A recent survey of 2502 female members of the American College of Emergency Medicine is instructive. Their responses were categorized into six main areas: work schedule, relationships with co-workers, administrative support and mentoring, patient issues, career advancement opportunities and compensation.

The emailed survey was opened 1,851 times and a total of 1,380 surveys were completed, giving an overall response rate of 56%. The bottom line?

79.5% of these women were satisfied with their  emergency medicine physician jobs
9.4% were dissatisfied
11% were neutral

Significant factors for emergency medicine career satisfaction weren’t markedly different than for woman in other, non-medical career areas. These included amount of recognition at work, career advancement, schedule flexibility, and the fairness of compensation. Some of the workplace factors associated with high satisfaction included an academic practice setting and equal opportunity for advancement and compensation, as compared with their male counterparts.

Physician satisfaction impacts patients too, many observers believe. For example, career satisfaction has been positively correlated with patient satisfaction and outcomes, while physician dissatisfaction is associated with an increase in medical errors. Many in the medical community are working to increase the satisfaction level in every specialty area in order to improve the delivery of healthcare overall.
